Happy May Day and Monday everyone! It is going to be a great day and month! I am happy to have you here and plan to get some good stuff down for you to use in your day/week!

This Past Week

This past week was great, and we are gearing up for the twins coming in the next couple weeks! I am nervous as hell and find myself wondering how things will go and change. Since it is happening though, it is meant to happen and will be an experience that is planned for us!

As for training and mindset of the past week, I have been prepping for a new training program, and continuing to study, read, and develop a mindset/mental performance program for athletes.

In everything, I find it important to practice what I preach, so the continual study of the mind and how it works and serves you is at the top of my list of tasks throughout the day.

Training

For training this week and the new block that I will be going through, I am all about being athletic and broadening the spectrum of what I can do physically. So, for this week, it will be less about the numbers of intensity and volume and more about describing what I plan to do moving forward. In one of my blog posts about training principles, which you can find here, I mention specificity. If I want to be athletic, I have to do things that fall in my definition of what athleticism entails.

So, I will be putting less of an emphasis on lifting and more importance on sprinting, jumping, throwing, and just moving fluidly through space so that if any situation arises in the future, my body can handle it.

What will I do more specifically? In the lifting portion, anything that involves a higher demand on the CNS (central nervous system) will be emphasized with less volume and all about power and moving weight as fast as I can. Anything that is less demanding on the CNS will be geared toward volume and endurance as it won’t completely beat me up before another intense session. One exception will be sprinting, I will be building up my sprinting capacity and speed to really drive an adaptation in this quality.

The main takeaway will be that I want to spend more time doing athletic things and actually moving around in space, not just lifting weights for the sake of staying strong.

Mindset

If you are continuing on from last week, you should have a goal set by now. If you have followed my instructions, that C-type dream goal should be written down, and every time you read it, there should be a rise in your frequency and emotion.

I want to continue on that by developing a self-image around that goal.

Imagine that you have accomplished that goal. What does that person think and feel? How do they act? What qualities does that person have that you have not yet realized in yourself? All of these things will go into your self-image. Write down everything that comes to mind, and write it in the present tense. Because the fact that you have thought up this goal and written it down means that it can happen and already has. You just have to be the person that has already done it.

Write down this self-image everyday and see how it helps shape your daily mindset and attitude.

Pop Culture

Not quite sure if this falls into the pop culture realm, but we had the Drake Relays down in Des Moines this week. It is always fun to watch and hear about how the broad spectrum of athletes from high school all the way up to professionals perform during this weekend of track & field events.

It is solid entertainment and cool to see what the human body is capable of in all of the different events.

If you think it is easy, just go try and do anything in track without training; you will see how impressive some feats are after you realize how much time and effort you would need to put in to become proficient at anything in the sport.

Here and Now

Now that you have your goal set, pull out your goal card and read it. Did you feel a rise in your emotion? Good.

Whenever you feel yourself slipping into a negative emotion or downward spiral of negative thinking, read your goal and imagine yourself in your goal.

The purpose isn’t to never feel a negative emotion, but it is to try and change old modes of thinking and feeling to change into the person that has accomplished your goal. Going into old modes of thinking and feeling is letting the past (and your old paradigm and self-image) control you and give you the same results moving forward. We are shifting that to the new so that your past has no bearing on your future.

Get that self-image written out.

Future

As we get into this week, I am just looking forward to being the best physical/mental coach I can be for the athletes I work with when it comes to work.

However, the big thing is no matter what, in 2 weeks tops, there will be 2 more children in the Lee family. Like I said, I am nervous for this, but I am also somewhat excited. We don’t know the gender, so it will be fun to find that out for sure! So having those kids come is the thing I’m looking forward to most.

I hope this morale boost gave you some practical things to apply to your life and uplifted your spirits this fine May Day. I really hope you have a great day, week, and month!

I appreciate you being here!

All Love,

Nick
